OFFICIAL: Jannik Vestergaard Leads Way to Al Ahli in Stunning Transfer Deal to Saudi Arabia

In yet another landmark move in the Saudi Pro League’s relentless recruitment drive, Danish international defender Jannik Vestergaard has completed a shock transfer to Al Ahli, in a deal that underscores the Middle East’s growing influence in global football. The 31-year-old centre-back, who was one of Leicester City’s standout players in their return to the Premier League, now joins the long list of European-based stars heading to Saudi Arabia.

Al Ahli Strike Again

Al Ahli, one of the Saudi Pro League’s four PIF-backed clubs, confirmed the signing late Wednesday via social media. The announcement video featured Vestergaard holding the club’s green jersey against the backdrop of King Abdullah Sports City, officially unveiling him as their latest high-profile acquisition.

According to sources close to the deal, the transfer fee is reported to be in the region of £20 million, with Vestergaard set to earn £10 million per year over a three-year contract. The move represents a significant windfall for Leicester City, who signed the towering centre-back from Southampton in 2021 for just £15 million.

For Al Ahli, the deal is another piece of an ambitious puzzle. The club has already brought in the likes of Riyad Mahrez, Roberto Firmino, and Edouard Mendy, and now bolsters their defence with a commanding presence in Vestergaard.

Vestergaard’s Journey: From the Foxes to the Gulf

Vestergaard’s path has taken him across Europe’s top leagues. After emerging in the Bundesliga with Hoffenheim and Borussia Mönchengladbach, he made the jump to the Premier League in 2018, joining Southampton. Known for his imposing 6’6″ frame, aerial dominance, and ability to play out from the back, he quickly became a respected figure.

Though his early period at Leicester City was marred by injuries and inconsistency, the Danish international rediscovered his form under manager Enzo Maresca during the 2023–24 season. He played a key role in their promotion campaign, starting 38 league matches and captaining the side on several occasions. Vestergaard’s defensive leadership and tactical awareness were central to Leicester’s dominant run back to the top flight.

Now, with a new challenge ahead, Vestergaard becomes the latest European veteran to embrace the Saudi football revolution.

Leicester’s Calculated Decision

For Leicester City, the decision to part ways with Vestergaard was likely influenced by multiple factors: his age, wage demands, and the club’s need to balance the books following promotion. With his contract entering its final year, the offer from Al Ahli provided a rare opportunity to cash in significantly on a player who had already delivered on the pitch.

Leicester manager Enzo Maresca acknowledged the transfer in a short statement:

“Jannik has been a model professional and a leader in the dressing room. We thank him for his immense contribution to our success last season and wish him all the best in this exciting new chapter.”

The club is now expected to pursue a younger, long-term replacement in central defence, with links emerging to Fiorentina’s Igor and Middlesbrough’s Dael Fry.

Al Ahli’s Master Plan

Al Ahli’s acquisition of Vestergaard fits neatly into the club’s broader strategy: build a squad capable of challenging for domestic and continental honours, combining attacking flair with defensive experience.

Manager Matthias Jaissle, formerly of Red Bull Salzburg, praised the signing:

“Jannik is a player with incredible experience and quality. He brings strength, leadership, and composure to our backline. He will be instrumental as we aim for the league title and beyond.”

Vestergaard’s experience in high-pressure environments — including international tournaments with Denmark — makes him a vital addition to a squad increasingly packed with proven winners.

Fan Reactions and Industry Impact

The reaction to the transfer has been swift and passionate. Saudi fans welcomed the move with open arms, excited to see another top-tier European player join their domestic league. On social media, hashtags like #VestergaardToAlAhli and #SaudiProLeague quickly trended.

Leicester fans, meanwhile, expressed mixed emotions. Many acknowledged the financial logic and wished him well, while others lamented the loss of a key player right after promotion.

One fan wrote on X (formerly Twitter):
“Gutted to see Vestergaard go. He was a rock last season. But fair play, that’s a huge move and a great fee. Respect.”

The Growing Pull of Saudi Football

Vestergaard’s move further validates Saudi Arabia’s pull in the modern transfer market. No longer merely a destination for aging stars on the decline, the league is increasingly attracting players still performing at the highest levels of competition.

His signing also marks a significant moment: a Premier League defender moving at the peak of his form to a Saudi side, opening the door for more deals of similar nature in upcoming windows.

What’s Next for Vestergaard?

Now officially unveiled, Vestergaard is expected to join Al Ahli’s pre-season preparations immediately. He will likely partner fellow international stars in a new-look backline, tasked with stabilising a defence that struggled for consistency last season.

As the Saudi Pro League begins to gain traction among global audiences, Vestergaard’s presence could prove instrumental not only on the pitch but as an ambassador for its growing credibility.

Final Thoughts

Jannik Vestergaard’s move to Al Ahli is emblematic of football’s shifting balance. Financial power is no longer confined to Europe, and leagues like Saudi Arabia’s are not just buying names — they’re buying leaders, professionals, and players who still have plenty to give.

For Vestergaard, it’s a bold leap into a rising league. For Al Ahli, it’s a defensive cornerstone secured. And for football as a whole, it’s another signal that the global game is evolving faster than ever.
