The return of Jose Mourinho to London sparks a debate among media

Jose Mourinho’s London Landing Sparks Media Frenzy as He Takes Over at West Ham United

London, UK — June 10, 2025

In one of the most seismic managerial appointments in recent Premier League history, Jose Mourinho has officially been unveiled as the new manager of West Ham United. The 62-year-old Portuguese tactician arrived at the London Stadium to a whirlwind of media attention, rekindling excitement and debate across the footballing world.

A Shock Move with a Statement

Mourinho’s appointment came as a surprise to many, given his recent role as head coach of AS Roma and frequent rumors linking him to national team jobs or a move to Saudi Arabia. Instead, he has chosen to return to the Premier League — and not to one of the traditional “Big Six,” but to West Ham, a club rich in history but one that’s long played in the shadows of London’s elite.

Journalists and pundits quickly reacted with a mixture of astonishment, admiration, and cautious skepticism.

“This is vintage Mourinho — always one to defy expectations,” said BBC Sport’s Mark Chapman during a breaking news segment. “West Ham isn’t just getting a manager. They’re getting a brand, a mentality, and a proven winner.”

The “Special One” Returns to London

Mourinho’s arrival marks his fourth managerial stint in London following spells with Chelsea (twice) and Tottenham Hotspur. Known for his charisma, confrontational style, and tactical brilliance, he returns to a city that has both revered and vilified him.

At the London Stadium today, Mourinho was photographed walking down the tunnel in a dark suit, sporting his trademark stern look. Hundreds of fans gathered outside the gates, many holding banners welcoming “The Special One” back to English football. The club confirmed the signing via social media with a simple but impactful message: “He’s here. Welcome, José.”

Sky Sports’ Kaveh Solhekol described the mood as “a turning point for West Ham’s ambitions. They’re not here to simply survive — they want silverware, and Mourinho has delivered it everywhere he’s gone.”

What Mourinho Brings

The media reaction has largely centered on what Mourinho’s appointment signifies for West Ham’s direction. Known for his defensive solidity and game management, Mourinho has won league titles in Portugal, England, Italy, and Spain, as well as two Champions League trophies. His critics argue, however, that his pragmatic style has aged poorly in the era of pressing, possession-heavy football.

“It’s a bold choice,” wrote The Guardian’s Barney Ronay. “But bold doesn’t mean wrong. Mourinho thrives on siege mentalities and rebuilding projects. If he can galvanize this squad, European football is not out of the question.”

West Ham’s recent seasons have been marred by inconsistency and underachievement, despite a Europa Conference League title under David Moyes. With Mourinho, the board is clearly signaling an intent to push into the upper echelons of the league.

A Divided Media Landscape

Not all journalists were optimistic. In The Independent, Miguel Delaney cautioned that Mourinho’s recent tenures have often ended in tension and decline. “Yes, he’s a legend. But is he the right man in 2025? His last few jobs haven’t exactly ended with parades.”

TalkSPORT’s Laura Woods added: “West Ham fans should be excited, but also realistic. Mourinho demands total control. The board has to back him fully — or risk repeating the implosions seen at Spurs and United.”

On social media, #Mourinho and #WestHam quickly trended globally, with fans offering mixed reactions ranging from euphoric approval to nervous uncertainty. One viral tweet read: “We either win a cup or burn down the house trying. Mourinho is box office.”

What’s Next?

Reports suggest Mourinho has already met with club executives to discuss summer transfer targets, training ground upgrades, and backroom staff changes. Early rumors hint at a potential raid on Serie A, with players like Paulo Dybala and Gianluca Mancini mentioned as possible targets.

He is expected to hold his first press conference later this week, and preseason preparations will begin within a fortnight.

For now, the footballing world watches with anticipation. Jose Mourinho is back in England. And West Ham, often dismissed as mid-table mainstays, have just become one of the most fascinating storylines of the season.
