Newcastle United Edge Closer to Tammy Abraham Deal as Owner Bin Salman Approves Additional Fee

St. James’ Park, Newcastle – June 9, 2025
In a stunning development that could reshape Newcastle United’s attacking lineup, club owner Mohammed bin Salman has reportedly sanctioned an additional financial package to finalize the long-anticipated transfer of England international striker Tammy Abraham. The deal, which has been in the works for several weeks, is now on the brink of completion following intensive negotiations between Newcastle, AS Roma, and Abraham’s representatives.

Deal Breakdown: A Strategic Move from the Top

According to sources close to the club, the transfer had initially stalled over differences in valuation and bonus structures. AS Roma had demanded a fee in the region of £38 million, while Newcastle’s opening bid hovered near £30 million with performance-related add-ons. However, in a bid to secure Eddie Howe’s top summer target, Bin Salman approved an additional £6 million fee, covering both signing bonuses and appearance-based clauses, to ensure the deal crossed the finish line.

The Saudi Arabian crown prince, who heads the Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF) that owns an 80% stake in Newcastle United, is said to have personally intervened after the club’s football operations team flagged the urgent need for a proven Premier League striker.

“Tammy Abraham represents the kind of elite quality that aligns with our long-term vision. His experience in both the Premier League and Serie A, along with his age profile and goal-scoring instincts, make him an ideal acquisition,” a source within the PIF told a Gulf-based sports outlet.

Why Abraham?

The 27-year-old striker has been a consistent performer in Italy, despite a knee injury that sidelined him for a significant part of the 2023-24 season. Before that setback, Abraham had netted 27 goals in all competitions for Roma during the 2021-22 campaign and followed that with a respectable 18-goal season in 2022-23. More importantly, his physical presence, aerial ability, and link-up play make him a perfect fit for Newcastle’s evolving tactical structure.

Eddie Howe, who has already held preliminary talks with Abraham’s camp, is believed to be enthusiastic about working with a player of his calibre. “He’s someone who can not only lead the line but also bring others into play, which will be essential for how we want to evolve as a team,” Howe said last week when asked about incoming forwards.

Financial Structure and Wages

The final transfer package is expected to be worth around £38 million with potential add-ons pushing the total fee to just over £42 million. Abraham has reportedly agreed to a four-year deal with a base salary of £120,000 per week, which could rise to £150,000 with performance bonuses and image rights considerations.

While the deal marks one of Newcastle’s most significant financial outlays since their takeover in 2021, club officials argue it’s a calculated move in line with Financial Fair Play (FFP) regulations. The PIF’s backing allows for flexible structuring, and Abraham’s commercial value is expected to offset a significant portion of his salary through endorsements and shirt sales.

Fan Reaction and Tactical Implications

News of the imminent transfer has ignited excitement among Newcastle fans, many of whom believe Abraham could be the missing piece in their push for top-four consistency and Champions League qualification. Social media buzzed with anticipation as fans imagined a front three featuring Abraham, Alexander Isak, and Anthony Gordon.

Football analysts agree that the addition of Abraham gives Howe crucial tactical options. He could either pair Abraham with Isak in a two-striker formation or rotate the duo based on opposition setups and fixture congestion.

“Abraham brings both depth and dynamism,” said former Newcastle striker Alan Shearer during a Match of the Day segment. “He’s got the hunger, he’s proven in big leagues, and he’ll thrive with the service from the wings Newcastle currently have.”

Final Hurdles and Announcement Timeline

While all major contractual points appear resolved, Abraham is expected to fly to Tyneside within the next 48 hours for a medical. If all goes well, an official announcement could be made before the weekend, allowing Abraham to join pre-season preparations in July.

There are still minor image rights details and international clearance to sort out, but club insiders remain confident. Abraham himself is reportedly excited about a return to the Premier League, particularly under a manager like Howe who favors dynamic attacking football.

Looking Ahead

The move for Abraham signals Newcastle’s ambition and the continued involvement of Mohammed bin Salman in shaping the club’s strategic direction. With more signings expected before the summer window closes, this deal could be the first domino in what promises to be a transformative transfer window for the Magpies.

As the black and white faithful await official confirmation, it’s clear that Tammy Abraham’s arrival at St. James’ Park could usher in a new chapter—one fueled by top-tier talent, deep pockets, and a burning desire to compete with the Premier League’s elite.
