Breaking: NCAA Hits UNC Football with Penalty for Rule Violation — Team to Pay Financial Penalty
May 8, 2025 – Chapel Hill, NC — The University of North Carolina’s football program has been hit with a financial penalty following an NCAA investigation into rule violations, the association announced Thursday morning.
According to the NCAA’s official release, UNC was found to have committed a “Level II violation” involving impermissible recruiting activities during the offseason. Specifically, the investigation revealed that members of the Tar Heels’ coaching staff held off-campus meetings with recruits during a non-contact period and provided transportation and lodging not permitted under NCAA bylaws.
As a result, the NCAA has imposed a $150,000 fine on the UNC athletics department and issued a public reprimand. Additionally, the football program will lose two official visits for the upcoming recruiting year and will be placed on probation for one year, though no postseason ban or scholarship reductions were imposed.
UNC Athletic Director Bubba Cunningham released a statement shortly after the ruling, saying:

Head Coach Mack Brown, who was not personally implicated in the violations, also responded, emphasizing that the infractions were “unintentional but unacceptable.”
“This is a wake-up call,” Brown said. “We’ve reviewed and reinforced our internal compliance procedures to ensure this doesn’t happen again.”
The NCAA praised UNC for its cooperation throughout the investigation, which reportedly began in late 2023 after a routine audit uncovered inconsistencies in recruiting travel logs.
While the penalties are not expected to significantly impact UNC’s 2025 season, the announcement could influence public perception and the confidence of future recruits.
This marks the first major NCAA infraction for the UNC football program since the academic scandal that rocked the university over a decade ago.
