Jamie Elliott Officially Announces Retirement: A Collingwood Era Ends with Gratitude and Glory

In an emotional statement that sent ripples through the AFL community, Collingwood star Jamie Elliott has officially announced his retirement from professional football, closing a remarkable chapter defined by courage, resilience, and brilliance on the big stage. After more than a decade in black and white, Elliott’s decision marks the end of one of the most beloved careers in modern Collingwood history.

The 32-year-old forward, affectionately known to fans as “Billy,” revealed his decision surrounded by teammates, coaches, and family at the AIA Centre on Friday morning. Fighting back tears, Elliott said the time had come to step away from the game that had given him “everything and more.”

“This club has been my home since day one,” Elliott said. “I’ve lived my dream here. Through all the highs and the injuries, I’ve always tried to play with heart and give back to the jumper. It’s hard to say goodbye, but I know it’s the right time.”

Elliott’s journey has been nothing short of inspirational. Drafted by Collingwood in 2011, he quickly rose to prominence with his aerial prowess, clutch goal sense, and fearless attack on the ball. Despite a career interrupted by recurring back and ankle injuries that sidelined him for multiple seasons, Elliott’s determination never wavered. His resilience became as defining as his spectacular marks.

Few will forget his match-winning moments—the soaring hanger against Melbourne, the ice-cold goals in packed finals, and his ability to turn games with a single spark. Over 190 games, Elliott kicked more than 300 goals, etching his name among Collingwood’s most exciting forwards of the modern era.

Collingwood coach Craig McRae praised Elliott as a “warrior” and a “true Magpie spirit.”

“Jamie has been through more setbacks than most players could handle,” McRae said. “But every time, he came back stronger. He’s one of those players who lifts everyone around him—not just with his skill, but with his fight. He’s a champion of our club and a champion of the game.”

Elliott’s retirement announcement also drew heartfelt tributes from fans and former teammates. Messages poured in across social media celebrating his artistry and loyalty. Many highlighted his role in Collingwood’s 2023 Premiership campaign, where his experience and leadership helped guide the team back to the top.

Off the field, Elliott’s influence was just as powerful. Known for his humility, kindness, and deep connection with supporters, he became a role model for young players navigating injury and adversity. In recent years, he also championed mental health awareness, sharing his own struggles and encouraging openness within the AFL community.

As for what comes next, Elliott hinted at remaining close to the game.

“Footy’s in my blood,” he said with a smile. “I’ll always be part of Collingwood, one way or another. But for now, I’m looking forward to a bit of rest, reflection, and spending time with the people I love.”

For Collingwood fans, Elliott’s retirement leaves an emotional void—but also an enduring legacy. He departs not just as a highlight-reel forward, but as a symbol of resilience, loyalty, and love for the game.

As the Magpies prepare for life after Jamie Elliott, one thing is certain: his name will forever echo through the stands of the MCG—each cheer, each goal, each memory a reminder of a player who gave everything for the black and white.

Jamie Elliott: forever a Magpie. Forever a fighter.
