Jordan Ayew Parts Ways with Leicester City, Arrives at St James’ Park to Undergo Medical with Newcastle United

Newcastle upon Tyne, July 6, 2025 — In what is shaping up to be one of the surprise moves of the summer transfer window, Ghanaian international Jordan Ayew has officially parted ways with Leicester City and arrived at St James’ Park to undergo a medical ahead of a proposed move to Newcastle United.

The 33-year-old forward, who joined Leicester last season from Crystal Palace, leaves the King Power Stadium after just a year. Despite a promising start to life at Leicester, scoring seven goals and assisting four in all competitions, Ayew found himself slipping down the pecking order as new manager Enzo Maresca focused on building a younger attacking line.

Sources close to both clubs have confirmed that Ayew’s exit from Leicester was by mutual agreement, with both parties acknowledging the player’s desire for more regular playing time and a fresh challenge.

A New Chapter at St James’ Park

Ayew was pictured earlier this morning arriving at St James’ Park, home of Newcastle United, to undergo a routine medical ahead of finalizing personal terms. The deal, believed to be a free transfer, is subject to the player passing his medical and agreeing to a short-term contract, reportedly for one year with an option to extend.

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe is said to be a long-time admirer of Ayew’s work rate, versatility, and Premier League experience. Speaking at a recent press conference, Howe did not directly confirm the signing but hinted at the club looking to “add experienced depth and leadership” to the attacking unit.

“We’ve got a dynamic squad, but we’re always on the lookout for players who can step in and make an impact, both on and off the pitch,” Howe said when asked about potential veteran signings.

Boosting the Magpies’ Forward Options

With a packed fixture list for Newcastle, including Premier League commitments, domestic cup runs, and a return to European competition via the UEFA Europa League, Ayew’s arrival would provide much-needed depth to the squad. He can play across the front three, a tactical flexibility that Howe values highly.

Should the transfer be finalized, Ayew will compete with the likes of Alexander Isak, Callum Wilson, and Anthony Gordon for minutes. However, his reputation as a reliable squad player and a selfless team contributor means he is more likely to serve as a rotational option and a mentor for some of the club’s younger stars.

Newcastle insiders see Ayew as a low-risk, high-reward signing. His professionalism, durability, and consistency over more than a decade in the Premier League make him a valuable addition to the dressing room.

Ayew’s Career So Far

Jordan Ayew, the younger brother of fellow Ghanaian international André Ayew, began his career at Olympique de Marseille before making the move to the Premier League with Aston Villa in 2015. He then had stints at Swansea City, Crystal Palace, and most recently Leicester City, amassing over 250 Premier League appearances.

Known for his tenacity, close control, and ability to score vital goals, Ayew has carved out a reputation as one of the most industrious forwards in the English top flight. He has also been a constant figure for the Ghana national team, with over 100 international caps and multiple appearances in the Africa Cup of Nations and FIFA World Cup.

His experience at both club and international level is expected to bring composure and depth to a Newcastle side hungry for silverware and progress.

Reactions from Fans and Pundits

Reactions to Ayew’s impending move have been mixed among fans. Some Newcastle supporters expressed cautious optimism, recognizing his veteran experience and utility role. Others voiced concerns about the club potentially stalling youth development with short-term signings.

Football pundit and former Newcastle striker Alan Shearer weighed in on the move during a segment on Match of the Day, stating:

“Ayew may not be a marquee signing, but he’s exactly the kind of player you want in your squad when the games come thick and fast. He won’t grab the headlines, but he’ll do the dirty work and keep defenders honest.”

Meanwhile, Leicester City released a short statement on their website thanking Ayew for his services and professionalism during his time with the club.

“Jordan Ayew departs with our gratitude and best wishes. He was a true professional and gave his all each time he pulled on the Leicester shirt.”

What’s Next?

Assuming the medical is completed without issues and personal terms are agreed, an official announcement from Newcastle United could come as early as Sunday morning. Ayew is expected to join the Magpies for their pre-season training camp in Portugal next week.

His arrival may also signal a wider shift in Newcastle’s transfer strategy this summer — opting for experienced, affordable reinforcements who can complement the high-energy pressing and tactical flexibility Eddie Howe demands.

For Jordan Ayew, this move represents not just another chapter in his storied Premier League career, but perhaps a final opportunity to leave a meaningful legacy at a top-flight club.

As Newcastle aim high in multiple competitions, Ayew might just prove to be the steady hand needed in key moments.

Stay tuned for official confirmation and updates as Jordan Ayew edges closer to completing his move to St James’ Park.
