A Hometown Rock Star Immortalized
The statue, created by acclaimed sculptor Brian Hanlon, captures Bon Jovi in his prime—microphone in one hand, fist raised in the air, mid-performance. It’s a familiar pose to millions of fans who’ve watched him command stages around the world for over 40 years. Etched on the base are lyrics from one of the band’s most beloved anthems, “Livin’ on a Prayer”:
“We’ve got to hold on to what we’ve got…”
During the ceremony, Sayreville Mayor Victoria Kilpatrick spoke of Bon Jovi’s connection to the town and the pride his success brings to the local community. “Jon Bon Jovi never forgot where he came from. This statue is our way of showing that we’ll never forget him either,” she said. “His music gave Sayreville a place on the world map.”
More Than Just a Musician
Jon Bon Jovi, born John Francis Bongiovi Jr., rose to fame in the 1980s with his namesake band, Bon Jovi. Their unique blend of rock and heartfelt lyrics catapulted them to international fame, selling over 130 million records worldwide. Adding to the celebration, the Sayreville High School marching band played renditions of Bon Jovi classics like “You Give Love a Bad Name” and “It’s My Life,” while local performers delivered heartfelt covers of his ballads during a post-ceremony concert.
A Surprise Appearance
As if the day couldn’t get more memorable, Jon Bon Jovi himself made a surprise appearance at the ceremony, to the absolute delight of the crowd. Dressed casually, he stepped onto the stage to a wave of applause, emotion visible on his face.
“I’ve been a lot of places, sung in a lot of cities, but Sayreville is home,” Bon Jovi said. “It’s where I first dreamed, first sang, first failed, and got back up again. This statue—it’s not just about me. It’s about every kid in this town who’s got a dream and the guts to chase it.”
He ended his speech with a few a cappella lines from “Wanted Dead or Alive,” sending chills through the audience and closing the ceremony on a note of authenticity and humility.

As the sun set over Sayreville, fans lingered near the statue, taking photos, leaving flowers, and tracing the engraved lyrics with their fingers.
