Breaking News: Iowa Hawkeyes Basketball Head Coach Jan Jensen Suspended After Heated Postgame Incident
May 3, 2025 | Iowa City, IA
The University of Iowa has suspended women’s basketball head coach Jan Jensen for two games following a postgame altercation with game officials after the Hawkeyes’ controversial loss to Michigan State last weekend.
According to a statement released by Iowa Athletics, Coach Jensen engaged in what the Big Ten described as “inappropriate conduct and unsportsmanlike behavior” toward referees in the tunnel after the game. Sources close to the program said the incident included “prolonged verbal confrontation and physical intimidation,” though no physical contact was reported.
Video footage of the incident, which has since gone viral on social media, shows Jensen visibly frustrated after a series of disputed calls late in the fourth quarter, culminating in her confronting officials near the locker room entrance.
The Big Ten Conference issued a public reprimand on Monday, and Iowa followed by announcing the suspension:
“Coach Jensen’s actions did not reflect the values of our athletic department or university. While we understand the emotion of competition, professionalism must always be upheld,” said Iowa Athletics Director Beth Goetz.
In a personal statement, Coach Jensen said:
“I let my passion cross a line. I apologize to the officials, our fans, and especially to my players. I’ll use this time to reflect and ensure it doesn’t happen again.”
Jensen will miss the final two regular-season games, with associate head coach Raina Harmon expected to take over coaching duties during her absence. The Hawkeyes are currently ranked No. 7 nationally and are preparing for another deep NCAA tournament run.
