The Green Bay Packers might have done it yet again. Jordan Love appears to have what it takes to become the franchise’s third consecutive quarterback. The 25-year-old quarterback received his first start in 2023, and at the end of the season, he had not disappointed.
He finished with almost 4,000 passing yards, 36 total touchdowns (32 through the air, 4 on the ground), 11 interceptions, and was just three points away from playing in the NFC Championship Game.
Despite the youthful offense
While the young attack appears to have most of its components in place, they may try to add one more exciting weapon.
The Green Bay Packers Meet With An Electric Wide Receiver Before The 2024 NFL Draft
The Green Bay Packers have one of the NFL’s youngest, deepest, and most talented wide receiver corps. Receivers would be among the team’s lowest-ranked NFL Draft needs.
Still, the Packers are constantly seeking for ways to improve. According to Justin Melo of The selection Network, South Carolina’s Xavier Legette was invited to visit the team before to the selection.
Who Is Xavier Legette, and what will he bring to the Packers?
Legette has a stocky frame similar to fellow former Gamecock Deebo Samuel, standing 6’1″ and weighing 221 pounds. At the NFL Combine, he ran a 4.39 40-yard dash, added a 40-inch vertical jump, and cleared 10’6 in the broad jump. He has the potential to be a true game changer in this league.
His draft profile reads as follows:
Xavier Legette was a late bloomer in college, but he had an NFL-worthy frame and ball skills. He lined up all over the field at South Carolina, but his primary position was outside receiver with vertical duties.
While Legette lacks agility and elegance at the line of scrimmage, he compensates with his long speed. He has enough energy to regularly threaten down the field on go routes, posts, and deep crossing routes once he gets out there. He is also a bully-style yards-after-catch player, given to his quickness and muscular frame.
More importantly, Legette is an outstanding contested catch player. With his huge physique and outstanding hand-eye coordination, he can easily high-point the ball. Legette is also an easy and flexible mover in the air, allowing him to contort his body as needed to catch the ball.
Many of Legette’s grievances boil down to refinement. He is not adept at battling at the line of scrimmage, nor is he a skilled route runner who can vary his approach to keep defensive backs guessing. He takes a really clear approach.
Legette can also struggle to get back to the ball and make himself friendly with the quarterback. That is especially noticeable on timing routes or when Legette is moving across the field and wants to attack the ball so that defensive backs do not undercut the route.
Legette is a fascinating prospect with good size, pace, and ball skills. The worry is that Legette is not a dynamic mover, and he is still a work in progress in terms of the position’s nuances. Legette would perform best in a play-action-heavy system that allows him to use his vertical talent and ball skills.
Legette is expected to be drafted in the late first or late second round. It will be fascinating to see where he settles. With three picks in the first two rounds, the Packers have plenty of firepower to go after him if they want to improve the offense even further.
