According to our latest poll, which questioned which prospect you expect the Green Bay Packers will select in the first round of next week’s NFL draft, the majority of you have aligned around two positions: offensive line and defensive back. It’s time to call your shot: which one will it be?
According to the research, Iowa cornerback Cooper DeJean — who is also rated the top safety prospect in this class — is the clear favorite to be the most likely Packer in the first round. Having said that, three offensive lineman — Washington’s Troy Fautanu, Georgia’s Amarius Mims, and Duke’s Graham Barton — garnered more votes in our poll than the other cornerback possibilities.
So, if they were to go head to head, do you think it would be a lineman or a cornerback at #25? Perhaps you contemplate the “other” option, in which the Packers select an off-ball linebacker or safety earlier than most draft pundits anticipate. According to the consensus draft board, Texas A&M’s Edgerring Cooper is the top linebacker in the class, ranking 42nd overall. Tyler Nubin of Minnesota is the number one safety, ranked 46th.
It’s possible that Green Bay believes they need to address one of those positions due to deficiencies in their depth chart, but the board is expected to fall in such a way that offensive linemen and cornerbacks are more likely alternatives with the Packers’ first-round pick. Fortunately, Green Bay now has two second-round picks (#41 and #58) owing to the New York Jets’ trade for Aaron Rodgers.
So, now that all of that is out of the way, which position group do you believe general manager Brian Gutekunst will select in the first round? It’s time to lock in your brownie points.
