The Green Bay Packers plan to use the 2024 offseason to elevate their squad from playoff challenger to Super Bowl contender. That is a really incredible situation to be in, only one full year after dealing away Aaron Rodgers. The Packers were only three points away from making the NFC Championship game, and optimism is high moving into next season (as it should be).
There will be some fine-tuning on offensively, but some significant alterations on defense. One of those adjustments could be a buy low situation for the Packers.
According to Sayre Bedinger of Dairy Land Express, the Green Bay Packers should sign a couple free agents before the NFL Draft to find their ultimate “buy low” playmaker. Safety Jamal Adams was one among them.
Someone will have to sign Jamal Adams eventually, right? When it comes to huge names, few are bigger than Adams right now. Although Adams was the focus of a contentious trade, he has traditionally been a very excellent, effective player when healthy.
He had seven tackles for loss in just nine games last year after recovering from a season-ending injury in 2022. There are certainly availability concerns here, but Adams assaults the line of scrimmage as good as or better than almost any other defensive back in the NFL.
There are far worse possibilities for new defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley, and Adams could potentially aid this club by floating in the box as a linebacker or playing a dime defensive back role. He’s a top pass rusher for his position.
Tyler Brooke from Heavy on Packers took it a step further. He suggested that signing Adams could be the ultimate “buy low” scenario:
Jamal Adams is the ultimate buy-low free agent.
Adams is coming off his worst season in the NFL. However, this provides an opportunity for the Packers to bring him in on a lower veteran deal to demonstrate his ability to still play at a high level.
Adams was a standout player for the LSU Tigers before joining the NFL. In 2016, he left Baton Rouge with two All-SEC accolades and second-team All-American honors. Adams has 209 total stops, 18 tackles for loss, five interceptions, and two forced fumbles over 36 college games.
Will the Packers sign another safety?
The Packers doubled down on outside linebacker a couple years ago, signing both Za’Darius Smith and Preston Smith. That identical concept might very well occur during the 2024 offseason at Safety.
New defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley spoke at length about the importance of the Safety position in the systems he prefers to run. Getting Xavier McKinney was a huge success, but they won’t stop there.
Allowing Jonathan Owens and Darnell Savage to go in free agency opened the door for Green Bay to sign numerous safeties this offseason. Jamal Adams might be among them.
