Donovan Peoples-Jones and Graham Glasgow comment to Harbaugh’s departure for the Chargers.
The football world is still responding to Jim Harbaugh’s departure from Michigan for the Los Angeles Chargers. MLive reporters surveyed the Detroit Lions locker room ahead of the NFC Championship game, getting opinions from former Wolverines stars Donovan Peoples-Jones and Graham Glasgow.
“It’s bittersweet,” Peoples-Jones told MLive of Harbaugh’s departure from Michigan. “He had an excellent run at Michigan. He took a long time to get to that point, but he eventually did. I’m quite thrilled for him and hope that this transfer benefits him and his family.”
People-Jones spent three seasons under Harbaugh at Ann Arbor. He was named a freshman All-American in 2017 and finished his collegiate career with third-team All-Big Ten honors in 2018 and 2019. Glasgow was a fifth-year senior when Harbaugh arrived at Michigan in 2015, and he feels his former coach is motivated to win the Super Bowl.
“He’s a very driven person, and he has his own goals,” he remarked. “At some time, I believe he wanted to compete in and win a Super Bowl. With that said, I’m grateful he was present for as long as he was. I’m grateful he given back so much to the program.
Glasgow equated the end of Harbaugh’s time at Michigan to the end of a relationship.
“You’re in a relationship with someone, and you desperately want something to change, or you’re trying to get more out of them than you’ve been getting, and they refuse to do it until (Harbaugh) is truly ready to leave. “(Michigan) didn’t want to do it,” Glasgow explained. “They’re only doing it to placate you at that time. I understand that he’s probably thinking, “Do I really want to keep dealing with this? “Or would I rather go and do something else?”
Michigan went 89-25 in nine seasons under Harbaugh, including a record-breaking 40-3 in the past three. The Wolverines have won three consecutive Big Ten championships and finished a perfect 15-0 season earlier this month with a national title victory over Washington, Michigan’s first since 1997.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter validated Glasgow’s claim that a Super Bowl appearance is on Harbaugh’s coaching bucket list.
A checklist for Michigan, with Harbaugh moving to the NFL (VIP).
“Here’s the deal โ Michigan had an offer on the table to make him the highest-paid coach in college football,” ESPN’s Adam Schefter said Wednesday night on SportsCenter. “But Michigan couldn’t offer him the chance to win a Super Bowl.” And, in the end, that’s it. He would have preferred to stay in Michigan. Michigan would have loved to have him. But the fact of the matter is that the Chargers gave him the opportunity to compete for a Super Bowl, and I believe Jim Harbaugh was certainly intrigued in Los Angeles.”
