The Green Bay Packers have been very active this summer. They parted ways with longstanding running back Aaron Jones and signed Josh Jacobs to a four-year, $48 million contract to become the new workhorse.
They also brought back A.J. Dillion, but his contract allows Green Bay to go on with a low cap hit. Having said that, the Packers are likely to target a running back in the draft to add additional juice to their backfield.
They’ve began to dig further into this class and have opted to bring in Kentucky running back Ray Davis for a pre-draft visit.
Packers News: Ray Davis Visits Green Bay
Jacobs will undoubtedly be the bell-cow in 2024, but the Packers require another dynamic playmaker, which Davis may supply.
The California native has excellent vision and patience, allowing him to rapidly find the hole. He is also swift enough to make defenders miss open space. You can’t dismiss him as a pass receiver as well.
Davis completed his college career with 3,626 running yards, 762 receiving yards, and 41 total touchdowns.
Davis may provide a welcome change of pace for the Packers, as Jacobs and Dillion are both muscular and bruising running backs. Having someone back there who can get away from opponents is also beneficial to an offensive.
His performance on the field is outstanding, but his past is more shocking. Davis grew up homeless and had to care for his two younger siblings. His parents were imprisoned for the bulk of his childhood, forcing him to live with family, friends, and occasionally friends of friends.
He was eventually declared a ward of the state and placed in foster care. He spent years in a homeless shelter before attending Trinity-Pawling, an all-boys college prep school. This allowed him to demonstrate his abilities as a basketball and football player.
The rest is history, and Davis is just a few weeks away from having his name called in the 2024 NFL Draft. Davis has always been a fighter who has faced tremendous difficulties. Nothing in the future will faze him.
The Packers have six total draft picks from rounds two through five, and one of them could certainly be used to choose Davis.
The Packers have nailed their offseason moves so far, but they need to make a few more acquisitions to increase their chances of winning the Super Bowl. According to FanDuel Sportsbook, Green Bay has the ninth-best chances, at +2200, to win the title in 2024.
