The Green Bay Packers have a knack for spotting diamonds in the rough. The Packers have discovered several key players in the mid to late rounds of the NFL Draft. They’ve even discovered some undrafted free agents who have had a huge impact on the franchise.
Today, the Packers added someone they hope will have a similar impact on the club.
The Green Bay Packers sign a 4.5 second 40-yard dash cornerback
According to his Instagram page, the Green Bay Packers have signed cornerback Gemon Green. Green spent the season with the New York Giants as an undrafted free agent from the 2023 draft class.
Green started 24 of 42 games in his four seasons at Michigan. His accomplishments included one interception and fifteen pass breakups. He received honorable mention All-Big Ten accolades in 2022, his final year.
What can Germon Green offer the Packers?
According to Zach Kruse from the Packers Wire:
Green appeared in three preseason games for the Giants in 2023, playing 69 defensive snaps and 14 special teams snaps. He made seven tackles (three stops) while allowing nine receptions on ten targets (one pass breakup) for 118 yards and one touchdown throw into his coverage.
Green injured his shoulder during the Giants’ preseason game against the Jets, but he is fully cleared after surgery.
Green (6-1, 183) clocked 4.53 seconds in the 40-yard dash, 37.5 inches in the vertical leap, 10-6 feet in the broad jump, 4.51 seconds in the short shuttle, 7.1 seconds in the three-cone drill, and 12 repetitions on the bench press. His Relative Athletic Score is 6.64 out of 10.0.
Green joins a cornerback corps in Green Bay that includes Jaire Alexander, Eric Stokes, Keisean Nixon, Carrington Valentine, Corey Ballentine, and Robert Rochell, all of whom return from last year’s roster.
A Jeff Hafley-led defense will undoubtedly place a focus on the secondary. Adding personnel that can contribute to both secondary and special teams would be extremely beneficial to this club in 2024.
