The Green Bay Packers were one of the most intriguing teams in the NFL last year. In their first complete season without Aaron Rodgers as starting quarterback, they fell three points short of making the NFC Championship game.
The Packers, now in their second season since replacing Rodgers, are usually viewed as a Super Bowl dark horse. That is extremely impressive in itself, given how difficult it is to win in this league.
The 2024 offseason has been devoted growing younger while staying competitive. However, the Packers are hot favorites to acquire one veteran to their defense who could make a huge difference.
According to Mike Jones of The Athletic, the Green Bay Packers are reportedly the top choice for a talented veteran.
S Justin Simmons
Randy Mueller’s Top 150 ranking: No. 22
Simmons, who was released by the Broncos to aid with their cap problem, is an impact player with a combination of height and speed, as well as outstanding tackling and coverage abilities. Simmons finished his second Pro Bowl season with 70 tackles, three interceptions, eight pass breakups, and two forced fumbles in 2023.
The Packers would greatly benefit from Justin Simmons.
With one more playmaker, the Packers may entirely rebuild the Safety position. In general, that would be similar to what the Packers did in 2019, when they signed both Za’Darius Smith and Preson Smith during the same offseason.
In free agency, the Packers lost Darnell Savage and Jonathan Owens to the Jaguars and Bears, respectively. There is a significant probability they will choose a safety in the 2024 NFL choose, regardless of whether they sign one in free agency.
Targeting someone like Simmons might allow a rookie Safety to get experience for a few years. Not to mention Xavier McKinney.
