Free agency has all but disappeared as focus has shifted to pro days, the 2024 NFL Draft, and the New York Giants’ attention.
As usual, the main job of free agency was completed practically immediately after it started more than two weeks ago. Still, the Giants have openings to fill and a ton of good players searching for work.
One of those is still safety, where the Giants only signed veteran Jalen Mills, who is competent but not a complete replacement for the departing Xavier McKinney, due to a mega-contract with the Green Bay Packers.
Bill Barnwell of ESPN said that the Giants may still attempt to target a safety in free agency after examining the work that each team still needs to complete this offseason. Barnwell penned:
Though [Dane] Belton showed promise late in the season with three interceptions, and the Giants may feel good about [Jason] Pinnock’s future, I would be surprised if they didn’t take advantage of the market and add at least one veteran safety. The Giants possess probably the least potent starting safety on paper with Justin Simmons, Quandre Diggs, Marcus Maye, Tashaun Gipson, and Julian Blackmon, all of whom are unrestricted free agents. A team that would otherwise be forced to use a youthful secondary would benefit from having one of those players join on a one-year contract and provide experience to the defensive backs room.
I concur with Barnwell that the Giants should benefit from the abundance of good safeties still available on the market. They won’t break the bank, but if one of the guys Barnwell listed eventually finds a home with the Giants, it won’t come as a shock.
Giants fans, if you had to choose, which one would you prefer?
