COULD IT BE TRUE;’ Three remarks regarding Lou Esposito, the new Michigan football D-line coach…
Sherrone Moore, the Wolverines’ new head coach, was forced to make the decision to appoint a new defensive line coach during the spring semester due to Greg Scruggs’ resignation.
Lou Esposito, the former Western Michigan defensive coordinator who briefly served as Memphis’ co-DC and D-line coach, was hired on Friday to take over as the Wolverines’ D-line coach. Moore was quick to identify a few viable.
A quality move late in the cycle.
Having to hire an assistant coach once spring ball has begun is not ideal. Sherrone did, however, make another excellent hire. One could argue that Esposito will suit Michigan football more than Scruggs.
Unlike Scruggs, Esposito has never coached or played in the NFL. However, he has identified and produced defensive linemen that will be selected in the first round, like Braden Fiske, who transferred to Florida State the previous season and is expected to be selected in the second round.
The defense of Western Michigan was used to getting pressure and sacks. In 2021, the Broncos recorded over 40 sacks; in 2022, their defense ranked second in the MAC. All of those are encouraging indicators, and this guy has a lot of experience in the game in Michigan.
Another assistant with coordinating experience.
This season, Michigan football will have a new defensive coordinator in addition to three assistant defense coaches who have all held the position previously. That will, in my opinion, benefit the coaching staff.
Wink will be one of college football’s highest-paid coordinators. However, it will be crucial to have individuals with diverse viewpoints and those who have called defenses in college. It’s something that might be advantageous going forward, too, should Wink choose to return to the NFL at some point.
