The Green Bay Packers are taking their defense in a completely different way. The Packers’ new defensive coordinator, passing game coach, and defensive line coach demonstrated their commitment to fielding a strong defense.
There are already the pieces in place on defense who can accomplish this, but there is one name on the trade block that has the potential to elevate the defense to new heights.
According to Sayre Bedinger of FanSided, the Green Bay Packers are expected to sign a four-time Pro Bowl cornerback.
Every situation is unique, but the recent trade that sent star cornerback L’Jarius Sneed from the The Kansas City Chiefs to the Tennessee Titans may cause other teams in the league, such as the Packers, to be a little more aggressive in working the phone lines for help at the cornerback position.
This is not the best cornerback draft at the top. Although Terrion Arnold and Quinyon Mitchell have a lot going for them, this year’s draft lacks a “Sauce Gardner”. There could be some over-drafting at cornerback in the first round, and who knows who will be available when the Packers select 25th overall?
ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported at the NFL Combine that some teams believe the Saints are willing to trade top cornerback Marshon Lattimore. If this is the case, the Saints may not receive much more than a third or fourth-round pick at this time.
If L’Jarius Sneed was looking for a 2025 third-round pick and a seventh-round pick swap, Lattimore, who has only played 17 games in the last two seasons, isn’t going to be worth much.
Especially with so much money left on his contract.
Marshon Lattimore Would Give The Packers A Massive Boost.
Despite missing 17 games over the last two years due to injury, Lattimore is still tied for 17th in interceptions (7) and 14th in passes defensed (42) among cornerbacks since the 2020 season. Ramsey had 8 interceptions and 30 pass breakups in his next 11 games combined. While there is more to the position than this, underestimating Lattimore’s recent performance is insulting.
He remains one of the league’s greatest cornerbacks, and pairing him with Jaire Alexander, Xavier McKinney, and perhaps a top Safety Draft choice would dramatically transform the secondary.
The Packers will undoubtedly continue to add to their secondary this offseason. It is unclear if this will be accomplished through the draft, free agency (again), or trade. However, I wouldn’t rule out any combination of the three.
