Michigan’s football program lost a quarterback through the transfer portal….
On Thursday, the Michigan football program lost a quarterback to the transfer portal, but it’s unlikely that many Wolverines fans would recognize the name.
Jack Grusser, a three-star quarterback prospect in the 2023 class who switched his commitment from Harvard to Michigan football and joined the Wolverines as a preferred walk-on, announced on Thursday that he had entered the transfer portal.
The move makes sense for Grusser. He certainly has the skills to play college football, most likely at the FCS level, but it was also clear that he would never play for Michigan.
Even after J.J. McCarthy declared for the draft, the Wolverines have a five-way quarterback duel with Alex Orji, Davis Warren, Jack Tuttle, Jayden Denegal, and top-100 freshman Jadyn Davis. Grusser was not addressed, and it was difficult to imagine him ever becoming a starter or backup.
“You know, I did a lot of hard thinking after my season about what I truly wanted and what I truly wanted to do with my career,” Grusser told the Wolverine after he decided. “I’m trusting myself and believing in myself that I can compete with the best.” I believe I was initially overlooked because I did not attend many camps and suffered an injury during my sophomore year. So I am confident I can compete with the greatest.”
The Wolverines did not sign another 2023 quarterback, so it was a wise decision for both parties. However, Grusser will have to go elsewhere if he wants to challenge for a starting position in 2024.
