The Green Bay Packers want to give Jordan Love every advantage possible in his quest to win a Super Bowl in the surprisingly competitive NFC North.
While their choice to let Aaron Jones depart surprised many, they found an exciting running back in Josh Jacobs to match his production. The former Las Vegas Raider is younger and has demonstrated qualities that should make him an excellent addition to the Packers.
Details about his hefty $48 million contract reveal the kind of impact he will have on the squad once he is officially on their payroll.
Green Bay Packers sign an outstanding contract to snag Josh Jacobs
Daniel Bates of The Spun wrote about the deal, which was initially reported by trusted NFL source Albert Breer. The deal discloses that the Packers structured his contract in such a way that just his signing bonus was the guaranteed money he’ll receive during the season:
According to Albert Breer of The MMQB, Jones’ contract is a “true year-to-year deal” with only his signing bonus guaranteed. Here’s a breakdown of the next four seasons:
$14.8 million in 2023.
$12.5 million to sign.
$23 million over two years.
$34.5 million over three years.
The reasons why the Packers decided to get Jacobs instead of Jones
The most obvious reason Matt LaFleur and Brian Gutekunst fired Jones was his performance last season. The 29-year-old is showing signs of wear and tear, having only run for 656 yards and two touchdowns on 4.6 yards per attempt in 11 games.
Meanwhile, Jacobs produced more during the same amount of playing time. Across 13 games, he completed 805 rushing yards and six touchdowns at 3.5 yards per carry.
Furthermore, Jones will be more in line with the present age group that LaFleur handles:
Jacobs offers attitude and physicality to a Matt LeFleur-coached team that enjoys pounding the rock. With so many young weapons on the perimeter, he should provide solid backfield output for the Packers, despite the fact that GM Brian Gutekunst admits it was difficult to watch Jones leave.
It would be interesting to watch how well Jacobs performs now that he has a dangerous quarterback who can relieve pressure on him. Green Bay fans hope he can emulate Jones’ spectacular accomplishments throughout the years.
