Everton have received a potential injury blow ahead of their meeting against Manchester United at Old Trafford this weekend.
United face Everton at Old Trafford in a Premier League match on Saturday noon. Erik ten Hag’s side has lost their last two Premier League games to Fulham and Manchester City, and they will be determined to win this time.
Andre Gomes, a midfielder, did not participate in Thursday’s training session due to an injury sustained earlier in the week. Gomes will have his calf tested out at Everton’s training base on Friday before deciding whether or not to play against United on Saturday.
If Gomes is unable to play, it will be another setback for the Portuguese international. He has proven himself capable of contributing to Sean Dyche’s first squad, but he has been plagued by injury since last summer.
The 30-year-old came in as a substitute against West Ham last Saturday, having recovered from his most recent injury. According to the Liverpool Echo, Gomes has had a difficult season due to injuries, despite appearing to have gotten his career back on track with a successful loan at French club Lille.
Dyche was willing to give him a shot in the summer, and Gomes was included to the squad for the Premier League opening against Fulham last August. But a series of ailments and problems prevented him from playing until December 23, when he traveled to Tottenham Hotspur. In that game, he came off the bench to score a goal and nearly set up two more, spearheading Everton’s valiant effort to recover from two early goals in a 2-1 loss.
Gomes scored a goal in the New Year, helping the Toffees defeat Crystal Palace and move to the FA Cup fourth round. However, he suffered a calf injury before making his return last week. Idrissa Gueye, who missed the West Ham encounter due to a groin problem, could be another injury question for Everton.
United will be battling with multiple injuries ahead of the encounter against Everton. Lisandro Martinez, Luke Shaw, Mason Mount, Rasmus Hojlund, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Anthony Martial, Harry Maguire, and Tyrell Malacia all missed the Manchester derby against Manchester City last Sunday, which ended 3-1.
