The Green Bay Packers and Philadelphia Eagles both intend to fight for a playoff spot in 2024. In 2023, the two teams appeared to have opposing seasons. The Eagles started the season on fire and were among the favorites to win the Super Bowl for much of the season. However, a late-season collapse, along with a Wild Card loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, put a dismal finale to an otherwise promising season.LJ
In contrast, the Packers began the season poorly. Many had written them off as playoff contenders after a 3-6 record. The team’s resilience was on full display in the second half of the season. That tenacity got them within three points of the NFC Championship game.
As the 2024 off-season begins, the Eagles may be looking for a 50-game starter from Green Bay.
The Philadelphia Eagles were thought to be after long-time Green Bay Packers starter.
ESPN writer Anthony DiBona explained why the trade makes sense for Philadelphia:
Following Jason Kelce’s retirement and Cam Jurgens’ move to center, it makes sense for the Eagles to pursue Jon Runyan Jr. in free agency.
In 30 career starts at right guard for the Green Bay Packers, Runyan Jr. allowed only four sacks.
With 1,611 snaps at left guard and 1,709 snaps at right guard, he has extensive NFL experience in both positions.
Given that his father spent nine seasons with the Eagles from 2000 to 2008, a return to Philadelphia could make sense for all parties.
Will the Packers let Jon Runyan Jr. walk?
Despite Jon Runyan Jr.’s contract expiring, the 2020 draft pick is not guaranteed to leave Green Bay this summer. According to Matt Schneidman of The Athletic, Runyan’s reps visited with Packers officials at the NFL Scouting Combine, and both parties are interested in re-signing him.
Since being chosen in the sixth round of the 2020 draft, Runyan has started 50 of the Packers’ last 51 regular-season games, as well as three playoff games. From 2021 to 2023, he played over 3,000 offensive snaps.
The Packers are known for investing heavily in their offensive line, so it would not be unexpected if they kept one of their own.
