REPORT: Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes’ Stats Show How Adaptable He Is
Patrick Mahomes, the Kansas City Chiefs quarterback, has a distinguishing statistic that demonstrates how many various ways he can win.
The Kansas City Chiefs are the NFL’s new dynasty. They’ve won their third Super Bowl in five seasons. Patrick Mahomes has guided the Chiefs down this stretch. Despite having Mahomes all these years, he has had to find new methods to win as the years have passed. One statistic in particular demonstrates how flexible Mahomes and the Chiefs have needed to become.
Average Length of Mahomes’ TD Passes Has Decreased
Mahomes’ average touchdown pass length has reduced dramatically over the last five seasons, dating back to 2019. To underscore this point, Warren Sharp of Sharp Football Analysis reported an average length of 17.3 yards. Do you know what Mahomes averaged in 2023? Only 3.9 yards per touchdown pass.
No Tyreek Hill Means No Deep Threat
If you look at the entire list, you’ll notice that the average touchdown length has been the lowest in the last two seasons. Tyreek Hill’s absence from the Chiefs was a recurring theme in those two seasons. Prior to the 2022 NFL season, the Chiefs traded Hill to the Miami Dolphins.
The deal effectively eliminated Mahomes’ primary deep threat. Unfortunately for Mahomes and the Chiefs, they have not fully replaced him at wide receiver. Nonetheless, they have managed to achieve overall success without him.
Kansas City Chiefs’ Stats Shift
This previous season, the Chiefs’ offense as a whole suffered. In the previous four seasons, they averaged 28-29 points a game. In 2023, Kansas City averaged only 21.8 points per game.
So, how have the Chiefs maintained their level of success despite scoring fewer touchdowns each game? The answer lies in their defense. In 2021, the Chiefs gave up 21.4 points per game. In 2023, the Chiefs allowed only 17.3 points per game.
Kansas City Chiefs Moving Forward
As the NFL’s current dynasty, the Chiefs can only improve on the standards they’ve already established. Next season, they hope to create NFL history.
What history is that? If the Chiefs win the Super Bowl again next season, they will become the first club in NFL history to win three consecutive titles. The Kansas City Chiefs are already being compared to past New England Patriots squads. Despite a decline in offensive performance, they are now seeing some success.
