Bill Belichick ‘will be the next head coach of the Kansas City Chiefs’ after Andy Reid’retires after this year,’ according to an NFL pundit, following the six-time Super Bowl winner’s Atlanta snub
Legendary NFL coach Bill Belichick’s next stop is Kansas City, according to commentator Craig Carton.
The second-winningest coach in NFL history is now available, having left the New England Patriots earlier this month. However, after being passed over for the Atlanta Falcons’ head coaching job, his chances of returning to the NFL next season are limited.
Belichick interviewed twice with Atlanta, but they decided to sign Rams defensive coordinator Raheem Morris instead, leaving only the Seattle Seahawks and Washington Commanders looking for new head coaches.
However, Carton believes neither organization will be Belichick’s new home, claiming the 71-year-old will lead the defending Super Bowl champs.
On his FS1 show, The Carton Show, on Friday, the host indicated that current Chiefs head coach Andy Reid will retire at the end of the season, and Kansas City owner Clark Hunt will choose Belichick to replace him.
‘I believe Bill Belichick will be the next head coach of the Kansas City Chiefs next season,’ Carton continued. ‘I believe that is where he will head once Andy Reid retires this year. There’s some speculation that he might retire. ‘He had an outstanding Hall of Fame career.
The Chiefs are thought to be concerned that Reid would leave at the conclusion of the season, despite the 65-year-old coach stating that he has no plans to retire.
Reid was asked about his long-term future at a Chiefs press conference a few weeks back, and he downplayed any speculation that he may leave in the near future.
But Mike Florio of NBC claimed on the Zach Gelby program last week that the Chiefs have Reid’s impending departure ‘on their radar’.
He went on to say that uncertainty about Reid’s future might lead to an impasse in the NFL coaching market because if the Chiefs job became available, it would be the first choice of every candidate related to a current vacancy.
Meanwhile, Belichick might be a free agent looking to fill the Chiefs’ post after being passed over by the Falcons despite interviewing twice.
According to reports, Atlanta’s front office opposed owner Arthur Blank’s hiring of the famed New England Patriots coach for fear of losing their jobs.
Carton reaffirmed the allegation on Friday, saying it reflected the organization’s current situation.
No offense to Raheem Morris, who many people admire and believe deserves a second opportunity as head coach, but this is why the Atlanta Falcons are a chaotic mess,’ he said.
‘They decided not to hire Bill Belichick, not because he was the greatest candidate or not, but because the general manager, vice president, and other executives realized that if he came here, I may lose my job.
‘They used influence to persuade Arthur Blank, the owner, that “if you get Belichick, we’re looking for a new coach in two or three years, so why go through that again?” And Arthur Blank purchased it.
This has nothing to do with Raheem Morris being a better candidate than Bill Belichick, as he is not. This was all about job security for all of the guys and ladies in the front office who were afraid that if Belichick came in, they would lose their jobs.
Meanwhile, Reid, who turns 66 in March, is extremely popular in Kansas City among both players and supporters. He won the Super Bowl last season, and despite a less consistent campaign this year, many see the Chiefs as legitimate contenders after reaching the AFC Championship game on Sunday.
When Reid, fondly known as ‘Big Red’ in the NFL, was asked if he would retire last week, he replied, ‘I haven’t even considered it. I am considering one thing (the next game).
‘I expected that to come up when you people asked these questions since I’m elderly, but not that old.’
Reid has been the Chiefs’ head coach since 2013 and has won two Super Bowls throughout his tenure. Reid previously coached the Philadelphia Eagles before joining the Kansas City Chiefs.
