Wesley McGriff, the cornerbacks coach at Auburn, has signed a new two-year contract.
After a back-and-forth two-week saga in which Auburn cornerbacks coach Wesley McGriff reportedly left Auburn for Texas A&M, Texas A&M announced McGriff’s hire, and McGriff quickly returned to Auburn, McGriff has signed a new two-year contract to rejoin head coach Hugh Freeze’s staff, according to a copy of his contract obtained by AL.com.
McGriff signed a two-year contract with Freeze prior to the 2023 season, with a salary of $600,000 in 2023.
McGriff’s new contract, which covers the 2024 and 2025 seasons, pays him $650,000 in 2024 and $750,000 in 2025 based on the retention bonuses in his contract.
The contract has a full buyout clause for McGriff if he is fired without cause, but it also includes a mitigation clause if McGriff accepts a new “football coaching or related” employment before his contract expires on January 31, 2026.
If McGriff chooses to leave Auburn before December 20, 2024, he will owe $350,000. He would owe $200,000 if he left before the end of the regular season or the SEC title game in 2025.
If McGriff accepts a position as an FBS head coach, a play-calling coordinator, or an NFL position, those payments will be invalid.
McGriff’s performance bonuses are the same as Auburn’s other assistant coach contracts.
Philadelphia Eagles release 1 of their Alabama wide receivers
On Tuesday, the Philadelphia Eagles’ roster included three former Alabama wide receivers. They finished Tuesday with two.
Julio Jones and DeVonta Smith remain on the active roster, while Cam Sims was removed from the Eagles’ practice squad less than a week after signing.
Philadelphia announced Sims’ inclusion to their practice squad on Thursday.
Sims had not been in the league since October 10, when he was removed off the New York Giants’ practice squad.
Sims has not played in the 2023 season.
Sims had eight receptions for 89 yards in his fifth season with the Washington Commanders in 2022, while playing 328 offensive snaps and 244 special-teams plays in 17 games.
Sims signed as a free agent with the Las Vegas Raiders in March, but was dismissed when the team cut its preseason roster to the regular-season limit of 53 active players on August 29.
Sims joined the Giants on September 4.
Sims, who caught 41 passes for 467 yards and two scores in four seasons at Alabama, made Washington’s regular-season squad as an undrafted rookie in 2018. However, Sims received a season-ending injury on the first kickoff of the game.
Sims rebounded to grab 57 catches for 804 yards and three scores in 54 games with Washington over the next four seasons.
Sims recorded two 100-yard receiving games with Washington. He caught three passes for 110 yards in a 23-20 defeat to the Giants on November 8, 2020, and seven receptions for 104 yards in an NFC playoff game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on January 9, 2021.
