Bill Belichick is dealt a blow as Andy Reid makes the Chiefs’ head coaching decision after the Super Bowl.
Andy Reid, the head coach of the Kansas City Chiefs, is likely to return for the 2024 NFL season after winning his third Super Bowl in five years against the San Francisco 49ers.
Legendary NFL coach Bill Belichick was eyeing the Kansas City Chiefs’ top job if Andy Reid wanted to retire following the Super Bowl victory, but it looks the 65-year-old will remain in his position.
The rumors surfaced after the Chiefs won their third Super Bowl in five years, 25-22 over the San Francisco 49ers. Star quarterback Patrick Mahomes shone brightly, throwing for 333 yards and two touchdowns to win MVP honors.
The Chiefs are now the first club to win consecutive championships since Belichick’s New England Patriots done so in 2004-05. Under Belichick, the Patriots made nine Super Bowl appearances, winning six championships and 16 AFC East division titles.
However, they faltered after star quarterback Tom Brady left to join the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2020. Without Brady, Belichick had a 29-38 record with the Patriots, missing the playoffs three out of four years. Following a disappointing season in 2023, Belichick resigned as head coach and de facto general manager, marking the end of his historic tenure with the team.
Belichick, who is now without a team, is reportedly interested in the Chiefs’ head coaching position if it becomes open. If Reid chooses to exit on a good note, he would love to work with outstanding players such as Mahomes and Travis Kelce.
However, Reid does not appear to be ready to hang up his whistle just yet. The experienced coach was rumored to be pondering retiring before the inaugural Super Bowl in Las Vegas. But, after downplaying the rumors and focused on the game against the 49ers, Reid appeared to reaffirm his return for another season.
When asked if he will return during the celebrations at Allegiant Stadium, Reid replied: “I haven’t had time to think about it, but yeah, sure.”
After winning three Super Bowls in five years, no one could blame Reid for wanting to retire on a good note. However, Chiefs owner and CEO Clark Hunt told NFL Network that he expects Reid to return in 2024. He went on to say: “I expect Andy to be back next year as we go for the three-peat.”
Reid has joined an exclusive fraternity of coaches after winning another Super Bowl. He is now one of the handful to have three or more victories, alongside legends Chuck Noll, Joe Gibbs, Bill Walsh, and Belichick.
Reid is also near the top of the all-time coaching wins list and second in playoff triumphs, trailing only Bill Belichick. Mahomes feels Reid is the finest coach ever, saying, “I believe he’s the best coach of all time.”
He went on to say: “I mean I know he doesn’t have the trophies yet, and I have a lot of respect for some of those great coaches, but… For me, he brings out the best in me because he lets me be me.”
