According to The Telegraph, David Moyes could leave the London Stadium at the conclusion of the season, as there is no evidence of the manager signing a new West Ham contract at the moment.
The newspaper claimed on its website [11 February] that the Scot “keeps his own counsel,” implying that leaving his position at the end of his current term is not an outlandish prediction.
It is claimed that, despite his recent triumphs with the Hammers, Moyes feels underappreciated by some fans, who are concerned about his team’s playing style.
Jason Burt writes for The Telegraph: “There has previously been a belief within the club that Moyes keeps his own counsel, is difficult to read, and may go when his contract expires.
“That has always been played down, but it is undeniably a strange relationship he has with the supporters. Moyes, whose current contract expires in just over four months, may deny it, but at the heart of it appears to be a feeling that, despite his achievements, he is underappreciated by some of the club’s supporters.”
David Moyes feels underappreciated at West Ham.
There is obviously a lot of speculation around Moyes’ chances of signing a contract extension at London Stadium, especially given the amount of criticism he has received despite being eighth in the Premier League and having a possibility of winning the Europa League.
After a number of difficult years at West Ham, it seems stupid not to sign Moyes to a new deal, even if the football is little less appealing.
Those same fans will criticize Pep Guardiola and Manchester City’s style of play, citing their ball dominance and excessive possession. The Hammers are at the opposite extreme of the spectrum, but they have produced results nonetheless.
The panoply of offensive players at London Stadium means Moyes’ club is designed for counter-attacking football, whether the fans like it or not. Jarrod Bowen and Mohammed Kudus’ pace is essential, while Lucas Paqueta and James Ward-Prowse’s ingenuity provide the service.
The saying “the grass is not always greener on the other side” is something West Ham fans should remember. It could be decades before West Ham wins another trophy, just as they waited to win the Europa Conference League in Prague, Czechia.
