Bayern Munich paid Tottenham Hotspur a club record €95 million to sign long-term target and England captain Harry Kane this summer. With high expectations on his shoulders, Kane has surely been a revelation in his first season in Bavaria, breaking various records along the way.
However, Der Rekordmeister’s Hinrunde was beset by injuries, leaving the team with little alternative but to look for reinforcements during the winter transfer window. Despite interest in Radu Drăgușin, who ironically joined Tottenham, Bayern chose on Kane’s countryman, Eric Dier.
This reunited the former Spurs and England combo, making them the third and fourth English players following Owen Hargreaves and Omar Richards to play for the record champions.
As a result, the Bundesliga has received significantly more publicity in England, particularly since Kane’s arrival. With two of the country’s top players based in Germany, England National Team manager Gareth Southgate has been watching the Bundesliga.
Southgate told Florian Plettenberg of Sky Germany that he had not spoken with Eric about Dier’s move to the Allianz Arena. But it’s an excellent decision for him. Bayern Munich is a fantastic football team. Wonderful history. One of the world’s largest football clubs. So, for Eric, this is an excellent opportunity. He’s a pretty kind man. He has played an important role in our team’s development. We wish him all the best with it.”
Southgate said of Kane: “He’s enjoying his experience.” We haven’t attended many of the games live. But we watch every one of his contests. It’s encouraging to see how competitive the Bundesliga is. Of course, you’re under pressure. When you are at a club like FC Bayern, you must win every week. So this is beneficial for Harry.”
With EURO 2024 nearing, Southgate will evaluate his options before deciding which players to take to Germany. While Kane will undoubtedly be one of the first players in his team, Dier will be trying to break back into the England group with some strong performances for Bayern.
So far, Dier has impressed for the Rekordmeister, but guaranteeing he plays a constant part for Thomas Tuchel’s team will be challenging. With Dayot Upamecano due to recover from injury before Saturday’s match against Bayer Leverkusen, Kim Min-jae will soon return from Asian Cup duty, meaning the Englishman will have to impress if he is to force his way into Tuchel’s squad.
