Mason Marchment, a Stars forward, was fined for interfering.
Dallas Stars forward Mason Marchment has been fined $5,000 by the NHL’s Department of Player Safety for interfering with Toronto Maple Leafs defenceman Jake McCabe.
The incident occurred during the second period of Toronto’s 5-4 victory over Dallas on Wednesday. On the play, McCabe picked up the puck in the defensive zone and redirected it up the boards to a teammate before turning and being hit late by Marchment. No penalty was called on the play, and a bleeding McCabe skated to the bench on his own power, clearly upset with the officials.
The $5,000 fine is the highest allowed under the Collective Bargaining Agreement, and it is not the first time Marchment has been disciplined by the league. The 28-year-old was fined $2,000 by the league in December 2022 under NHL Rule 64 (Diving/Embellishment) following an incident against the Ottawa Senators that culminated in a hooking penalty for Derick Brassard.
Marchment was disciplined by the league for exaggerating Brassard’s hook in order to obtain a penalty, his second such incident. The first embellishing incident occurred a month prior, and Marchment received a warning.
Despite the discipline, Marchment is having a tremendous season for the Stars, with 16 goals and 23 assists in 50 games. He has been on fire recently, scoring two goals and assisting on four others in his last five outings.
The proceeds from Thursday’s fine will go to the Players’ Emergency Assistance Fund.
