Kevin De Bruyne has stated that Tottenham Hotspur should not be thrown out of the Premier League title race just yet, as the season nears its conclusion.
Some enthusiastic Spurs fans may have harboured dim illusions of Ange Postecoglou’s side mounting a late title charge before of Saturday’s match at Goodison Park.
However, those aspirations were destroyed when the Lilywhites put up a poor performance and lost a late goal, costing them two points.
While Tottenham are still mathematically in the title race, trailing league leaders Liverpool by only seven points, their performance on Merseyside will concern fans, with the North London side failing to demonstrate that they can compete with City until the end.
City’s number one Ederson gave a brutally honest appraisal of the title fight a few days ago, saying that it is a three-horse contest between the defending Champions, Liverpool, and Arsenal (Express).
Kevin De Bruyne sees Spurs as title contenders.
However, De Bruyne disagrees with his partner, arguing that Spurs and the Villans should not be counted out just yet.
When asked about the number of competitors for the top award, the midfielder told Standard Sport: “There are so many teams. Liverpool and Arsenal are with us, but I believe Villa and Tottenham are very close.
“For the time being, we shall battle in groups of five. There’s some pressure to perform well, but it’s pointless to consider what will happen in the next two months.
“We need to win games and try to enjoy them. We understand what we need to do. The pressure is always on, but we’re prepared to fight till the end.”
Spurs Web Opinion
This season was always going to be a transitional year for Tottenham, so finishing in the top four will be an impressive feat.
However, privately at Spurs, Postecoglou and the players may have their sights set on the big prize and believe they are capable of going on a winning streak now that their roster is virtually fully fit.
