The 2024 Green Bay Packers will be something amazing. Despite expectations that they would be in a rebuilding year, the Packers were one of four remaining NFC clubs. In addition, they were three points short of winning the conference championship.
A young Packers offense, lead by Jordan Love, has shown that it can score against any defense. However, General Manager Brian Gutekunst hinted that the team may be adding an experienced veteran in the near future.
Brian Gutekunst Hints to Blockbuster Trade in the Near Future
During a press conference on Thursday, Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst raised the potential of a trade:
“Whether it’s staying and picking, trading, moving around…maybe trading those picks for veteran players, who knows.”
The Packers may not have a lot of cap space in 2024, since they still owe money to Bakhtiari ($40.018 million cap hit) and Jones ($17.028 million cap hit), but they are undoubtedly wealthy with draft picks. The Packers’ front office is poised to be aggressive this offseason, with five picks in the first three rounds of the 2024 NFL Draft, including two in Rounds 2 and 3.
These picks are typically utilized primarily in the draft by clubs with a philosophy of drafting and developing players. Gutekunst’s comments, on the other hand, openly raised the prospect of a blockbuster trade.
What Would the Green Bay Packers Trade For?
The Packers’ top priorities heading into the 2024 offseason are offensive tackle, running back, interior offensive lineman, cornerback, and safety.
The Packers are unlikely to spend a lot of money in free agency for any of those spots, but exchanging mid-round choices for a solid starter is certainly an option. To play devil’s advocate, if the Packers were able to “break the bank” for a star player, that would send a message to the league.
This past season, the Packers expressed an interest in trading for standout running back Jonathan Taylor. It was also widely believed that they were willing to offer him the contract he desired.
The Packers may be active in the trade market in 2024, looking for someone who can help the team right away while also offering longevity in a critical position.
