Four months after being let go by the Boston Red Sox, Chaim Bloom is slated to join the St. Louis Cardinals’ front office as an advisor to their President of Baseball Operations.
The St. Louis Cardinals have named Chaim Bloom as an Advisor to the President of Baseball Operations, the team announced on Monday.
Bloom served as the Boston Red Sox’s Chief Baseball Officer from 2019 until 2023, when the franchise let him go. After missing the playoffs in three of the previous four years, the Red Sox replaced Bloom with Craig Breslow, a Chicago Cubs executive.
Bloom spent 15 years with the Tampa Bay Rays before joining Boston. He later rose to the rank of Senior Vice President of Baseball Operations in St. Petersberg, where he served as the franchise’s second in command.
John Mozeliak is the Cardinals’ President of Baseball Operations, while Mike Girsch is the Vice President and General Manager. The pair have worked in St. Louis’ front office for 29 and 18 years, respectively.
That continuity at the top has helped the Cardinals emerge as one of the league’s most successful modern organizations, winning the World Series in 2006 and 2011. St. Louis has made the playoffs 16 times in the last 24 years, after missing them in 11 of the previous 12 seasons leading up to the twenty-first century.
The Cardinals have lost in the NL Wild Card round three years in a row, from 2020 to 2022, and they are coming off their poorest regular season record in over three decades in 2023.
Bloom, an analytics-driven advisor, might help St. Louis make the proper decisions around the margins in the future, despite the fact that he attracted a lot of criticism from fans during his time with the Red Sox.
