A former Sunderland defender has signed for a new team in League Two.
Denver Hume, a former Sunderland defender, has moved permanently to League Two side Grimsby from Portsmouth.
The 25-year-old left Wearside for Pompey in January 2022 for a cost of £200,000, but he only appeared 31 times in a disappointing two-year tenure at Fratton Park. Hume has agreed to a contract with Grimsby Town, who are currently 20th in League Two.
Grimsby’s head coach, David Artell, said the club’s website, “We are happy to get Denver over the line; he is a very bright child. You don’t get bought by a team like Portsmouth unless you’re a good player!
“I’ve seen him play for Sunderland and Portsmouth before, and he was great in those games. He’s a guy that can move inside and outside the pitch, up and down.” He’s a fantastic guy; I spoke with John Harley at Portsmouth and one of the players there about him, and they both gave him high references, so I know he’s a decent kid.
“We want him to come in, hit the ground running, be good defensively, get up the pitch as we know he can, and influence the game. So I’m delighted to be working with Denver, and hopefully he’ll help us win some games.
Portsmouth manager John Mousinho stated, “Denver has been nothing but professional since I arrived at the club a year ago.” We’re delighted he’s found somewhere where he can hopefully enjoy a regular schedule of games, and we wish him all the best in the future.”
