Islam Slimani, a former Leicester City striker, is currently available after leaving Brazilian club Coritiba, according to journalist Manu Tournoux.
Slimani recently played for Algeria at the African Cup of Nations, but his country was eliminated from the competition in the group stages after failing to win a single match.
Throughout the competition, the striker made three appearances, all as a substitute. He did not, however, have a significant influence in any of those games, failing to score a goal.
Although he has not lit the world on fire in recent seasons at both the international and club levels, Slimani has had extremely productive seasons in the past. He may not have given his all in recent years, with stints at French club Brest, Belgian powerhouse Anderlecht, and, most recently, Coritiba, but the Algerian international is likely to have something to offer at a high level.
He is, in fact, his country’s leading striker, with 46 goals in 102 games, and he may be the type of player that some EFL clubs consider as a last-ditch move this year.
Slimani has previous experience in England from his time at Leicester City, as well as a brief stint at Newcastle United. During his stint with the Foxes, the now 35-year-old scored 13 goals for the club, eight of which came in the Premier League and one in the Champions League.
Given his recent achievements, it appears doubtful that Leicester will pursue their former striker, but Slimani would fit in well in the Championship and adds valuable experience. Following today’s announcement, the striker may consider returning to England to try to revive his career.
A tweet from the club’s official Twitter (X) account reads:
“Coritiba informs that athlete Islam Slimani is no longer part of the club’s professional team, due to the early termination of his employment contract.”
Slimani’s next move is currently unknown, making it nearly impossible to predict where he will settle next considering his extensive international experience. His stature and physicality, however, would fit the play style of many Championship teams, making him a player to keep an eye on.
Writer’s perspective
Islam Slimani will be remembered as one of Leicester’s major purchases following all of their success, which may not have gone as well as the club had intended. Slimani made only 47 appearances for the Foxes over five seasons, with multiple loan periods during that time.
The chances of him returning to the King Power Stadium are slim, but he may help a number of other Championship teams willing to take a chance. Now 35, this could be one of his final seasons in professional football, and the striker may want to go out on top.
There is no reason why an ambitious team should pass up the opportunity to sign him on a free transfer.
