Sunderland are expected to make some moves before the January transfer window closes at 11 p.m. tomorrow night.
The January transfer window shuts for business at 11 p.m. on Thursday.
Sunderland, like many others in the Championship, has had a difficult month so far, with Leo Hjelde joining on a permanent basis from Leeds United yesterday to jumpstart the club’s transfer activity.
Under-fire manager Michael Beale will undoubtedly be keen for a few more names to walk through the doors at the Stadium of Light, but there will also be some who leave.
Here are three players who could leave Sunderland before the January transfer window ends.
ALEX PRITCHARD
The first and possibly most obvious contender to depart before the deadline is Alex Pritchard.
The 30-year-old lost his fan favourite status after it was reported before to the final game against Stoke City that he was making himself unavailable for selection and wanted to leave the club as soon as possible.
Pritchard has been linked with a move to Birmingham City, where he would reunite with former manager Tony Mowbray; the Blues might pay as low as £100,000.
Jack Clarke
If there is one high-profile exit from Sunderland for the remainder of this month’s transfer window, it will be Jack Clarke.
Sunderland’s standout player has once again sparked transfer speculation after scoring 13 goals in the first half of the 2023/24 Championship season, with Crystal Palace, West Ham, and Lazio all interested.
The latter are claimed to have made a £15 million approach, but Michael Graham believes Sunderland would need more than £20 million to consider selling, and even then it is improbable.
However, Clarke remains a player who might be moved, particularly if a team makes a large, late bid.
JAY MATETE
Sunderland’s Forgotten Man Jay Matete is another player who might be on the move before 11 p.m. tomorrow, with reports last week indicating that two clubs are interested in signing him.
The 22-year-old is yet to play for Beale and in the Championship this season, despite guiding Plymouth Argyle to promotion from League One last season.
If another midfielder joins the club, Matete may be able to leave on loan.
