This Sunderland star appears to be on his way out of the club in late January.
The January transfer market closes in less than 48 hours, and it appears to be a frantic finale to what has been a relatively quiet window for Sunderland.
Leo Hjelde signed a permanent contract with Leeds United yesterday, and Romaine Mundle is expected to join from Standard Liege.
However, there could be a few exiting the Stadium of Light, with Alex Pritchard being the most obvious.
He’s been linked with a move to Tony Mowbray’s Birmingham City since Pritchard ruled himself out of contention for the Black Cats.
Birmingham City agree on Alex Pritchard fee.
According to a developing story from Alan Nixon on Patreon, Pritchard, 30, has agreed to a two-and-a-half-year contract with Mowbray’s Blues, following a financial agreement between Birmingham City and Sunderland.
Nixon adds that Pritchard was happy to continue at Sunderland, but was only offered an 18-month contract extension for less money than he will currently make at St Andrew’s.
The former Tottenham Hotspur player joined Sunderland on a free transfer in 2021 and has since appeared 115 times in all competitions for the Black Cats, scoring nine and assisting 25; in the Championship this season, Pritchard has one goal and five assists from 23 games.
Time for everyone to move on.
Pritchard’s time with Sunderland has been very positive, and his departure is a sad one.
After being released by Huddersfield Town, he was a little lost. However, he demonstrated guts in dropping down to League One with Sunderland, as well as quality in helping them return to the Championship and finish in the top six last season.
His assist record is particularly good, and he’ll be reunited with Mowbray, who has often expressed an affection for Pritchard.
