Sunderland are interested in recruiting a Championship player who is “very good” technically, according to a new report from reputable writer Alan Nixon.
Sunderland Transfer News
The Black Cats are running out of time to make any late transfers this month, as Michael Beale wants to bring in players who may help turn things around after a dismal start to his tenure as manager.
Sunderland have been connected with a number of players this month, with Amad Diallo reportedly set to return to the club from Manchester United after impressing on loan there last season. Barnsley midfielder Callum Styles is also thought to be a transfer target, with the Hungary international seen as someone who may improve the club’s midfield options.
In other news, former Liverpool attacker Liam Millar has emerged as a potential Black Cats signing, with the Canadian presently on loan at Preston from FC Basel. Yann M’Vila is also said to be joining the club, but no official announcement has been made.
According to a recent update, Sunderland may also be trying to sign a player from one of their promotion rivals.
Sunderland wants Leo Hjelde.
According to Nixon on Patreon [via MOT Leeds News], Sunderland want to sign Leeds United defender Leo Hjelde before the end of the January transfer season.
The Whites could even accept a loan offer for the 20-year-old, who has struggled to be a regular under Daniel Farke this season, starting only one Championship game.
Despite his lack of playing time, Hjelde might be a very wise addition for Sunderland before the end of the month, given his long-term potential as a player. Former Ross County manager John Hughes once praised him, saying:
“In terms of potential, he plays at a level that is two or three years above his age. He’s only 18, so he’s still a baby, but he’s 6ft2 and needs to grow a little more. That will arrive. He’s a speedy athlete who no one would be able to outrun. He has a terrific recovery if someone passed him, and he’s technically extremely good.”
Hjelde could come in and compete with Sunderland’s other centre-backs for regular minutes, while also providing Beale with the extra depth that might be essential in the promotion race between now and the end of the season.
If he arrives and hits the ground running, having a strong effect until May, the Dutchman might be considered a permanent signing in the summer, with Leeds seemingly not seeing him as a crucial part of their long-term ambitions.
