We are down to four teams in the playoffs, and the Conference Championships will be played on Sunday. Adam Peters is the new general manager for the Washington Commanders, who have the second overall pick. He is in the process of hiring the team’s next head coach, and they will collaborate with managing partner Josh Harris to rebuild the franchise. This might begin with selecting their future quarterback early in the first round.
Ron Rivera was fired after four years as head coach and decision-maker for the Washington Commanders. He was still striving for his first winning season with the franchise, so he went all in on second-year quarterback Sam Howell, who had previously only started one game in the NFL, a Week 18 victory over the Dallas Cowboys to conclude the 2023 campaign. Rivera also gambled big on former Chiefs OC Eric Bieniemy as the replacement for Scott Turner. The Sam Howell experiment had its highlights, but it came crashing down hard and fast in the final six weeks of the season.
Peters and his new head coach will most likely have a decision between at least two of the top three quarterbacks in the draft. There is also the possibility of trading up with the Chicago Bears to obtain their guy at #1 overall. Caleb Williams has been predicted as the top quarterback in this draft, and we have one mock that makes that move possible. Drake Maye is the most favored pick among mock drafters attempting to anticipate the draft. He has long been regarded as the #2 quarterback, but another young quarterback may have surpassed him by the time the draft takes place in Detroit on April 25.
ESPN’s Mel Kiper Jr. presented his first mock draft of the year today, after a video detailing his selections yesterday. He chooses with the quarterback choice that many people rate third. LSU’s Jayden Daniels won the Heisman Trophy in his last college season. He was considered for the top pick in the first round, but he is now competing with Williams and Maye for the top quarterback in the draft. There are many issues about Daniel’s build and playing style, but he is a dynamic quarterback who will likely remind Washington fans of RG3. Kiper mentioned Daniel’s development this season, as well as Maye’s inconsistent play with the Tar Heels.
