The rapid decline of the Philadelphia Eagles has been one of the major stories in the NFL this season. Coach Nick Sirianni led his team to an NFC Championship last year and started the 2023 season with a 10-1 record before an epic collapse that saw the team lose five of their final six regular season games. A first-round playoff exit at the hands of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers only added to the pressure on Sirianni and his staff.
On Tuesday, it was reported that the Eagles will part ways with offensive coordinator Brian Johnson.
The team at ESPN’s Get Up found themselves in an awkward position when the news broke live on air as they were discussing the Philadelphia Eagles. As the crew was breaking down whether Sirianni should remain with the team, Mike Greenberg received word that announced that Brian Johnson “is out” as the Eagles’ defensive coordinator.
The Eagles, led by start quarterback Jalen Hurts, boasted one of the most potent offenses in the league in 2022. They ranked third in the league in points per game (28.1), third in yards per game (389.1) and fifth in rushing yards per game (147.6). Those numbers have dropped off significantly in 2023.
Brian Johnson worked as a quarterback coach with the organization between 2021-2022 before being promoted to the coordinator position. He finished with an 11-7 overall record this year.
The decision comes only a day after reports started to circulate that the team will move on from defensive coordinator Sean Desai. Sirianni’s job appears to be safe but after a disappointing finish to the season, the Eagles will look to rebuild during the offseason.
