Steelers BREAKING: emotional Mike Tomlin Reveals Decision to Pittsburgh Players: Baltimore Ravens Rival Stays!
Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin’s emotional reaction at the end of the season fueled suspicion that he is reaching the end of his job in Pittsburgh.
The emotion is real. But the speculation is incorrect.
After the Steelers were eliminated from the 2023 playoffs by the Buffalo Bills on Monday, Tomlin spoke to the media like he normally does. When a reporter said, “You have a year left on your contract,” Tomlin simply walked away.
And the conjecture intensified…
The following day brings more clarity. According to NFL Network, the coach informed his players in a team meeting on Tuesday that he will remain in his position until 2024.
Tomlin is the longest-tenured NFL head coach since Bill Belichick’s departure from New England. While he has just held the championship for a week, several speculated that this season could be his last, regardless of the year remaining on his contract.
The Steelers received the No. 7 and final seed in the AFC just as the season concluded, and expectations were low heading into the playoffs after spending the year chasing the AFC North champion Baltimore Ravens.
Tomlin has a remarkable career in Pittsburgh, having gone 17 seasons without losing. However, Tomlin has only made two conference championship game appearances since the 2008 Super Bowl title, and none since a 36-17 loss to the Patriots following the 2016 season.
On Monday, NFL Insider Ian Rapoport tweeted that Tomlin would be free to write his own ticket out of town if he wanted to, and that the team would not fire him.
And now we know: Tomlin is penning a ticket to stay in Pittsburgh.
