The Green Bay Packers have certainly exceeded expectations this year. In Jordan Love’s first year as a starting quarterback he has not only led the Packers to a winning record and a playoff berth, but he also led the team to a blowout of the #2 overall seed in the NFC.
Saturday the Packers will be in Santa Clara to take on the San Francisco 49ers in the divisional round of the playoffs. Ahead of that matchup, reports are surfacing that the Packers could be in line to land a young playmaker for their defense.
The Green Bay Packers Pegged To Land 24-Year-Old Safety Geno Stone
Gordon McGuinness of Pro Football Focus annotated Stone possibly heading to Lambeau Field:
GREEN BAY PACKERS: S GENO STONE
If Darnell Savage departs in free agency, the Packers will need safety help. Despite tallying seven interceptions in 2023, Stone is unlikely to break the bank as a free-agent signing. He is not a standout run defender but has earned PFF coverage grades above 73.0 in each of the past two seasons and showcased his ball-hawking ability this past year.
A realistic priced young safety that could come in and make plays for the Packers’ secondary is exactly what the Packers will be in the market for this off-season.
It has been a remarkable fourth season for Stone with the Ravens. He is quickly making a name for himself on Baltimore’s defense as a former seventh-round pick.
“Stone has six interceptions this season, the second most in the league, and he makes a lot of plays because of his alignment/assignment discipline in the secondary,” ESPN writes. “He gets to his landmark, identifies the concept and plays within the structure of the defense.”
Stone’s contract will expire at the end of the year and the Packers could certainly swoop in and sign the young playmaker.
