The Green Bay Packers have parted ways with a number of key players in recent offseasons. Of course, Davante Adams and Aaron Rodgers are prominent names, but the team elected not to re-sign a number of key veterans who had a significant impact on the franchise over the years.
However, one former star could soon be at the center of another huge transfer.
Former Green Bay Packers Star Could Be At The Center Of Yet Another Massive Trade This Off-Season
According to Alex Kay from Bleacher Report:
Jets get WR Davante Adams.
Raiders receive a 2024 first-round pick (No. 10 overall).
Davante Adams proved he can still be an excellent NFL receiver without Aaron Rodgers, but he hasn’t found team success since the dynamic tandem split following the 2021 season. The Las Vegas Raiders have missed the playoffs in each of the two seasons since trading for the superstar wideout, and they face an uphill climb to be contenders in 2024.
According to ESPN’s Dan Graziano, Adams has not demanded a trade but is a “obvious” choice to be dealt before free agency starts. Graziano noted that the regime that brought the superstar to Vegas is no longer in place, nor is quarterback Derek Carr, Adams’ NCAA teammate and one of the primary reasons he wanted to play for the Raiders.
Rather than keeping Adams on a rebuilding team in the twilight of his career, the Raiders may trade him this offseason and recoup some of the draft capital they gave up to acquire him.
The 31-year-old still has three years left on the blockbuster five-year, $140 million contract he signed after landing in Las Vegas, and while he’s tallied up an impressive 2,660 yards and 22 touchdowns on 203 receptions since the start of the 2022 campaign, could be best utilized as trade chip by the incoming regime.
Could Davante Adams And Aaron Rodgers Actually Reunite?
Since acquiring Rodgers, the Jets have been tracking Adams. ESPN reported that their sources believe whether the Raiders consider trading Adams may depend on how the 2023 season turned out. In 2022, Adams signed a five-year, $140 million deal with the Raiders.
According to its total value, the contract is the most lucrative among wide receivers. He ranks second in AAV ($28 million) behind Tyreek Hill ($30 million) of the Miami Dolphins.
The Raiders season ended with them missing the playoffs and an open head coaching vacancy. It is possible the team decides to reset and start over. That could mean getting as many premium draft picks as possible. The Jets will certainly be entering 2024 in a “win now” mode with Rodgers pending return.
